Quick start
----------
1) Drag the Net Manager and Net Agent files to your Macintosh hard drive or floppy drive. Make sure AppleTalk is active on the Macintoshes you intend to use. Open Net Manager on one Macintosh on the network. This Mac will receive the status messages from the Net Agents in the zone.
2) In Net Manager, use the items under the "Special" menu to setup threshold values for disk space monitoring. You can also set the update interval for the Net Agents, etc. See the section below titled "How do I change settings?" for additional information.
3) Open Net Agent on the other Macintoshes in the same zone as the Manager. As they startup, they will retrieve the updated settings from the Net Manager. The Net Agents will continually monitor the status of the Macintoshes they are running on, and send messages to the Net Manager.
4) Both the Net Manager and Agents will run until you quit.
5) Consider placing an alias or copy of Net Agent in the Startup Items folder to automatically launch when you startup the Macintosh.
What is Net Manager?
-------------------
Net Manager is a network and desktop management tool. Its purpose is to allow you to monitor conditions on Macintoshes on your network. It relies on Net Agents to perform this monitoring and send informative messages when conditions meet or exceed threshold values.
How do I use it?
--------------
Net Manager runs on a non-dedicated Macintosh on your AppleTalk network. It displays status messages from other Macintoshes on the network running Net Agent. Net Manager can also write these messages to a text file ("Net Manager Data"), stored in your "Preferences" folder under System 7 or the default Net Manager folder under System 6.
Net Agent runs on client Macintoshes in the same zone as Net Manager. Net Agent monitors the status of the Macintosh it is running on, and compares values against the settings it has retrieved from Net Manager. Net Agent also has a set of default settings it uses, so you do not have to modify the settings using Net Manager if you do not want to.
Both of these programs run in the background or foreground, so you can use other applications at the same time.
Settings can only be changed from within Net Manager. Each Net Agent will request these settings from Net Manager at startup.
The settings may be changed using the items in the "Special" menu. Current categories include:
Network - timeout and retry values.
Disk Monitor - disk space in percentage or megabytes.
Agent - update (sleep) interval in minutes for Net Agent.
Manager - whether to save incoming messages in a text file. This file is titled "Net Manager Data", and is stored in the Preferences folder under System 7 or the default Net Manager application folder under System 6. You can also enable or disable notification for those situations where new messages arrive and Net Manager is not the foreground application.
Features
--------
- Change settings for all Net Agents from one location.
- Requires System 6 or greater.
- Works with Open Transport. Requires AppleTalk.
- Tested on a variety of 68k and Power Macintoshes, using System 6.0.5 through 7.5.3.
Version history
--------------
v1.1 (released 7/96)
- Net Manager uses the Notification Manager to alert you to new messages via a System beep, flashing icon, and diamond. You can also disable notification.
v1.0 (released 12/95)
- Initial release.
Known challenges
----------------
- Net Agents currently only look for a Net Manager in their local zone. In other words, a manager must be running in the same zone as an agent to receive messages from that agent.
- AppleTalk is the only currently supported protocol.
In spite of these challenges, please enjoy the program!
